Irrigation projects for 2024

The villagers in Daikundi depend on agriculture. This year has set out to be a good year, with lots of rain promising high yields. But not every year is like this. Climate change will make droughts and other extreme weather events more likely and precipitation patterns will become increasingly unpredictable. We want to help people build better irrigation infrastructure to manage their water resources. This will shore up people’s resilience in the face of climate change.

In 2024, we will support 5 local irrigation structures, two channels and 3 irrigation pools.
In Koopaj and Charkh villagers want to build irrigation channels. We are asked to provide the materials. The channel in Charkh will be 900 meters long, the one in Koopaj will cover a 1000 meters. Having these channels in place will free people from the burden of having to carry water over these distances to water their trees and other agricultural lands.
In Deyag, Jawooz and Tagab, villagers want to build new irrigation pools. Those water retention basins help to regulate the flow of water and help steer water to where it is most needed.

Over the last couple of years, the villagers have planted lots of new almond trees. The new irrigation structures will help irrigate these trees.

The pool in Jawooz

Work on the irrigation pool in Jawooz was started in May 2024. Darya has delivered the construction material at the end of May. DARYA spent 1015 Euro on this project. The cost information (for this project and all others) does not include pay for DARYA staff in Afghanistan.

Work is proceeding fast. Below, you can see a state of play by June 11th.

By June 22nd, the basic structure is built.

The pool was completed in August 2024. It will benefit 6 families and help irrigate 800 trees.

The irrigation channel in Charkh

In June DARYA delivered the hoses and other materials for the irrigation channel in Charkh. The channel will cover 900 meters and benefit 10 families. DARYA spent 785 Euro on this project.

Work on the channel has started.

The pool in Tagab

At the end of June, DARYA delivered the construction material for the pool in Tagab. It will benefit families. DARYA spent 1043 Euro on this project.

The villagers started construction right away.

To celebrate the completion of the pool the people gathered once more.

The pool in Deyag

In July 2024, DARYA delivered the construction material to the villagers in Deyag to enable them to build an irrigation pool. DARYA spent 988 Euro on this project.

The pool will benefit 7 families and help irrigate about 1000 trees.

The irrigation channel in Koopaj

In Koopaj, we provided hoses and other construction material so that the villagers can build a 1000 m irrigation channel. About 30 families will benefit from the project. DARYA spent 1450 Euro on this project.

Work on the channel is ongoing.
