In the small hamlet Barkar-e-Hassan Raza, there is a small water carrying stream. The people’s gardens and fields are approximately one kilometer away. The villagers want to build an irrigation channel of 1150 meters to carry some of the water from the stream to their fields. For this, they need hoses and pipes.
We will support the villagers, and help them build an irrigation channel. The projected material costs are 110,000 AFN. With donations from Austria, we are able to fund more than 80% of the costs. The villagers will cover the rest themselves.
Naim interviewed the people of Barkar-e Hassan Raza, who explained about the project they want to implement. In the background you can see the water creek, from where they want to take the water.
In this video, Mr. Adili explains about the difficulties the villagers are facing. They have around 2000 almond trees, but due to drought in the past years, the trees suffer and the villagers cannot get a proper harvest. Due to poverty, they were unable to buy the necessary equipment to construct an irrigation system and channel the water from the nearby creek to their lands.

On the right, you can see the type of hoses the villagers want to buy. They will need 12 hoses, each measuring 100 m. In addition, they need braces to connect the hoses.
For a small part of the distance they need to cover metal pipes are required.
Transporting the material from the Bazar to the village will cause some additional costs.
Below you can see some of the lands that shall be irrigated. Now in spring, the areas are quite green as it’s the wet season, but soon in summer the area will dry out.

Project update: we bought hoses 🙂
Thanks for all your donations! We transfered the money now and our project partners in Barkar used the money to buy the hoses and other materials. Transporting the hoses was challenging. Read about this here:

Work on the channel has started,
but will take a couple of weeks presumably. Here are some pictures:

Update: Water is flowing!
The hoses are now all connected and are already carrying water to the almond gardens. Here you can see some water flowing through the hoses.
Some work remains to be done. At the starting point of the channel, the villagers want to dam up the creek and construct a small pool with a drainage to regulate the inflow into the channel. But this summer, they will already be able to irrigate their orchards!
May your work be successful! May you harvest lots of tasty almonds! All the best, Sissi
I wish you all the best for your projects. It is wonderful to see, how busy you are. And it is a really great idea to work together with the people in this region to help them and to support them helping themselves. Thank you.
